A sacred site, forbidden to all but those who prayed for rain
Tadachi Falls is located in the small mountain town of Nagiso. At the southern entrance to the Kiso Valley, Nagiso is most famously known for the Nakasendo Post-Town, Tsumago-juku. But the town spans a much wider area and there is a lot more to see and do. Nagiso is 93% mountainous forested terrain. Much of the landmass is covered in steep granite mountains and deep forests. Only a small fraction of the land in Nagiso is farmable. The people of Nagiso looked to the forest. They hacked a living out of forestry and crafted items out of wood. And to this day they still do.
Entering the forest and accessing the waterfalls at Tadachi Falls was strictly prohibited in ancient times. There was only one exception to that rule. Tadachi Falls was only to be visited to pray for the rain, to quench the thirst of farmers’ crops. This rule remained until the first half of the 1900s. Fortunately, the beautiful falls are now open to the public. In this trekking experience, you and your guide will visit this ancient sacred site for yourself.
Among the many waterfalls that make up Tadachi Falls, Tenga Waterfall is the largest and most revered. The river cascades down 40m of granite rock. As you trek alongside this steep mountain river, you will see waterfalls of all shapes and sizes and pools with hues of blue that words cannot come close to describing.
Wooden walkways, precarious stairs, and suspension bridges take you further and further into the forest. The famous ancient trees of Kiso are all around. The changing seasons bring impermanent visitors in the form of wildflowers, herbs, berries and more. So come to Tadachi Falls and pray for rain, but not on the day of your trek.
